A jamendo experiment in Slovenia

A law student and GNU/Linux buff from Ljubljana, Slovenia, Matija is also a fan of jamendo. A few weeks ago, when his external hard drive crashed, causing him to lose his entire music collection, he had an idea: “I thought, ‘heck, if I’m happier with free software, let’s see if I can live with free music as well!’” So he came up with The (Great) Jamendo Experiment: “to live with only free music for at least a full month and survive.”

This being a real human experience, he decided he’d report about it weekly on his website, sharing his musical findings and letting people know if listening to all-jamendo music all the time was a viable choice.

Well guess what: more than 6 weeks later, he’s still at it and quite happy at that. “Quite fast I realised that jamendo is full of great artists! I decided to prolong the experiment until further notice and write reports as time permits.”

So far, Matija reports the discovery of about two dozen artists he really liked, including The Very Sexuals, Grace Valhalla, Jimmy The Hideous Penguin and Elektronoid.

What a brilliant idea! It would depend on your musical taste though. Perhaps I haven’t explored Jamendo enough, but I’ve found that most of the music on Jamendo is electronic. As a lover of Classical music and traditional Eastern music I am struggling to find much on Jamendo.

@Bennu: you’re right, some genres are better represented on jamendo than others, mainly all things electronic, and pop/rock. Nevertheless, if you like classical music, have you found these artists? http://www.jamendo.com/en/user/onclassical

I’m honoured that my humble homepage (pun intended) was promoted on Jamendo’s Blog.

The (Great) Jamendo Experiment started because people wouldn’t believe me that I could live off of free music for over a month and I wanted to show it’s possible. I hope it will help at least a bit to convience both listeners as well as artists to free (as in speech) music. It’s not hard to see that the music industry has to change, but software piracy is not a (good enough) solution. On the other hand sites like Jamendo, Magnatune, BlocSonic et simili are!

The timing of this Jamendo’s post is sadly rather bad, because my laptop died two weeks ago and I won’t be able to listen to free music and write about it for the coming few weeks, until I get (and install) a new one. So, please bare with me. And don’t take this as the “further notice” mentioned above. I intend for this experiment to run for at least a year or so ;)

@Bennu: I completely agree. I’ve yet to find something that would satify my occasional hunger for UK Garage or more agresive artists like Kasabian, the Rapture or Prodigy. Some genres are very well represented, while others are very lacking indeed. This may also be due to Jamendo (or free netlabels in general) not being well known enough in certain music circles. A metalhead just told me a month ago that the underground death metal groups share their tracks for free with their fans, but I’m fairly certain that if they knew about Jamendo and similar projects, that they’d be more then happy to join. Just think about how many artists are offering tracks for free on MySpace (a most awful site!), YouTube or even FaceBook (even less suited for sharing music) …and all that by not even mentioning a free license.

P.S. Egad, that photo’s about 3 years old and taken at a friend’s place in Germany ;) But it’s actually my fault for not having any proper photos to produce :P

@jampat: thanks for that. I am checking it out now.

@Matija “hook” Šuklje: I know of Metal artists selling thier CDs on EBay for $2, that doesn’t even cover expenses!

  8. Matija "hook" Šuklje Says:

@Bennu: …and it’d be probably cheaper and more successful to use services like Jamendo. To some lesser known bands I usually suggest taking on a ‘net label, but so far not many have switched (mostly due to the lack of time, they say).
