New on jamendo: buy collector’s items!

This is a brand new feature we just released: artists can now create their own Virtual Shop on jamendo and sell all kinds of goodies and rarities to their fans. Think albums in high definition sound, booklets in pdf or concert posters to download. But they can also be physical objects or even Action goodies for which the artists commit to come play at your house, invite you backstage, have dinner with you or whatever they come up with.
All this against a small fee. Or not so small. The artists alone decide what to sell, set their price, and the money will go straight to their pockets. Go check out the first available rarities here!
This just in: the very first Rarity item has just been sold today (29 May). It’s the album “Personnel” by Tom La Mèche. Congratulations to him!

All in all it’s a nice idea, but I have mixed feelings about the “high definition” sound. Could this enable artists who care more about money then the fan community to upload low quality sound to Jamendo for free and demand a fee for normal quality dowloads? Or to sell the same quality of sound for a fee that would be available as a free download? Will there be some sort of quality control?
Don’t get me wrong — I completely agree that the artsts have the right to get paid by their fans. If nothing else, at least by concert tickets and merchandise. The idea that you can hire them via Jamendo to play on your party is great! :D
Also, using WAV directly for download I think is a bit much. Personally, I would prefer the lossless format FLAC — it doesn’t lose any quality compared to the WAV, but takes half the size on the disk (or your portable media player).

Are the artists allowed to sell high definition music that isn’t creative commons licensed in this store? If so - I don’t like it at all because then the only difference between Jamendo and a classic music store like iTunes becomes that the preview on Jamendo is full length and creative commons licensed instead of the 30 seconds non-free preview that iTunes has - but the core product will be non-free on both Jamendo and iTunes which I don’t like.
All music delivered through jamendo should be creative commons licensed I think.

Hi Pelle,
No, of course not: artists can only sell their own stuff, just like they can only upload their own stuff for free download as well. And yes, it’s all under CC, like all content on jamendo.
These are not meant to become jamendo’s “core product”, they’re just a little extra for artists (extra exposure and extra money).

I think the core idea is excellent. Think about it: indie artists now have another revenue stream, which has got to be good for penniless music creators!

What on earth is “hi-fi resolution” supposed to mean? You really got to make it clear what exactly the “rarity” or “goodie” or “whatever stupid word you will use next” is.
“Jamendo will withdraw the total sum of 2 (two) euros plus 30 (thirty percent)% of the price of the considered goodie excluding of VAT, corresponding to the functioning fees of the web site http://www.jamendo.com.”
2 Euro plus 30% from a 5€ thing. That’s evil.
Great idea, but as usual terribly implemented. Dammit. :(
PS: The is wrong.

Love the collectors items on Jamendo! I come from a marketing background (and a family of musicians) This is a great way to connect with the fans and create deeper branding. It helps create a direct connection to the fans.
