Este quinteto londinense habla de espiritualidad, filosofía y psicología como elementos que forman parte del proceso de elaboración de su música, un tipo de rock sofisticado. Algunos días antes del estreno de su primer álbum, Jamendo quizó saber más sobre esta banda. Aquí tenéis algunas pistas…

“Cuatro de nosotros hemos estudiado en suiza, en el instituto. Entre el 2002 y el 2004, todos nos mudamos a Londres para estudiar la filosofía y la psicología. Ahí conocimos a otro músico con el que compartíamos cierta visión de las cosas y decidimos formar una banda juntos”, explica Sebastián, uno de los guitarristas de la banda.

Ego
“Todos compartíamos la misma visión y queríamos un tipo de música progresiva que reflejara las ideas que hemos ido acumulando antes y durante nuestros estudios. En el centro de nuestras charlas, siempre estaba el concepto de las dos facetas de la personalidad– por una parte el ego, una construcción mental a la que nos identificamos con firmeza, y por otra el verdadero yo, subyacente, un ser indiferenciado que nos vincula con todos y con todo. Este interés por el “yo” fue lo que originó nuestro nombre de artista ‘Of The I’.”

Gratuidad
La banda comenzó a tener cierto éxito cuando empezaron a distribuir gratis en internet las demos que habían grabado en su estudio en Londres. La “increíblemente positiva bienvenida recibida en páginas como Jamendo” les dió ánimos para grabar un álbum completo.

Su ambición es nada menos que crear “un nuevo tipo de sonido que implique elementos derivados de la espiritualidad, la filosofía, la psicología, las experiencias personales de cada uno y la música que utilizarón como fuente de inspiración”. Describen su música como rock progresivo, melódico y experimental, lo que les coloca en posición de compararse con referencias como Tool, At The Drive In o Quicksand.

“Hemos realizado este álbum como si fuera un viaje continuo. La versión en CD incluye transiciones que vinculan todas las canciones entre ellas, lo que invita el auditor a escucharlo de un tirón. Aquellas transiciones todas se inspiran en nuestras vidas - un arroyo en un bosque suizo cerca del que crecí, una grabación que hice delante de un templo budista en Vietnam, el harmonio de una de nuestras abuelas, una tormenta que vivimos juntos, una línea de metro que pasa por debajo de nuestro piso, etc. En fin, este álbum es muy personal para cada uno de nosotros.”

Estreno
Balance Instars saldrá el día 6 de octubre. “Este álbum nació con algunas ideas y finalmente acabó siendo un álbum de una hora de duración.” Y como Of The I es son del tipo de bandas que “gestiona personalmente todos los aspectos de [su] música”, el álbum se pondrá a la venta en su propia página web www.ofthei.com. “Quattro di noi siamo andati al liceo in Svizzera. Fra 2002 e 2004, ci siamo tutti trasferiti a London per studiare filosofia e psicologia e incontrare altri musicisti dalla stessa maniera di pensare, e con i quali abbiamo deciso di creare un gruppo musicale”, spiega Sebastian, chitarrista.

“Tutti noi abbiamo condiviso la stessa visione della musica progressiva, che era quella di riflettere nella musica le idee che abbiamo incontrato prima o durante i nostri studi. Al centro delle nostre discussioni era il concetto dei due io - l’ ‘ego’, una costruzione mentale, con cui ci identifichiamo fermamente, e il vero io soggiacente, il sé indifferenziato, che ci collega con tutti e con tutto. Questa focalizzazione sull’io ha dato l’idea del nostro nome, ‘Of The I’.”

La band ha cominciato ad essere conoscituo distribuendo su internet gratuitamente dei demo, registrati nel loro piccolo appartamento a Londra. La “travolgente reazione positiva ricevuta via siti come Jamendo” gli ha ispirato di registrare un intero album.

“Abbiamo ideato questo album come un unico viaggio continuo. La copia fisica contiene transizioni che connettono tutti i brani fra di loro, invitando l’ascoltatore di ascoltare tutto l’album alla volta. Queste transizioni sono tutte frammenti della nostra vita – un ruscello nel bosco svizzero dove sono crescuto, una registrazione che ho fatto in un tempio buddista in Vietnam, l’armonio della nonna di qualcuno di noi, una tempesta che abbiamo vissuto insieme, un tubo che passa sotto casa nostra… Questo album è veramente personale per ognuno di noi.”

Balance Instars sarà pubblicato il 6 ottobre. “È nato sotto la forma di qualche idea e si è trasformato in un album debutto di un’ora.”  Of The I essendo il tipo di gruppo che “personalmente gestisce tutti gli aspetti della [sua] musica”, venderà l’album sul suo sito web, ofthei.com. “Vier von uns haben ihren Schulabschluss in der Schweiz gemacht. Zwischen 2002 und 2004 hat es alle von uns nach London verschlagen, um dort Philosophie uned Psychologie zu studieren. Dort trafen wir auch einen seelenverwandten Musiker, mit dem wir die Band gründeten“, erklärt Gitarrist Sebastian.

“Wir teilen alle die Vision einer progressiveren Art von Musik, die unsere eigenen Ideen und die Einflüsse unseres Studiums reflektiert. Als zentraler Punkt steht das Konzept eines zweifach vorhandenen “Selbst”. Das “Ego”, eine mentale Konstruktion, mit der wir uns sehr stak identifizieren und das wahre, eigentliche “Selbst”…ein undifferenziertes Wesen, das uns mit allem und jedem verbindet. Unser Fokus auf “das Selbst” war im Endeffekt auch Schuld an unserem Namen ‘Of The I’.“

Die Band machte sich vor allem einen Namen, indem sie ihre Demos, die sie in ihrem kleinen Londoner Studio aufgenommen hatten, kostenlos über das Internet verteilten. Die “überwältigenden positiven Reaktionen auf Websites wie Jamendo” inspirierten sie dazu, ein ganzes Album aufzunehmen.

Balance Instars wird am 6. This London-based five-piece invokes spirituality, philosophy and psychology as part of the elaboration of its sophisticated vein of rock. Just days before they release their debut album, Jamendo breaks things down for you.

Switzerland
“Four of us went to high school in Switzerland. Between 2002 and 2004, we all moved to London to study philosophy and psychology and met another like-minded musician with whom we decided to form a band”, explains Sebastian, one of the band’s guitarists.

“We all shared a vision of a progressive form of music that was to reflect ideas we had encountered before and during the course of our studies. Central to our discussions was the concept of two selves – the ‘ego’, a mental construction that we strongly identify with, and the true underlying self, undifferentiated being which connects us with everybody and everything. This focus on ’self’ eventually gave rise to our name, ‘Of The I’.”

Free
The band started making a name for itself by distributing the demos recorded in their small London flat for free on the web. The “overwhelming positive response received on sites like Jamendo” inspired them to record a full length album.

They strive to nothing less than to create “a new kind of sound that invokes elements derived from spirituality, philosophy, psychology, each member’s personal experiences, as well as the music that has inspired them”. They describe their music as progressive, melodic, experimental rock, which places them not too far from the likes of Tool, At The Drive In and Quicksand.

“We’ve conceived this album to be one continuous journey. The physical copy contains transitions which connect all the songs, inviting the listener to experience it in one sitting. These transitions are all snippets of our lives – a stream in a Swiss forest I grew up next to, a recording I made outside a Buddhist temple in Vietnam, one of our grandmother’s harmonium, a storm we experienced together, a tube that passes by under our flat… This album is very personal to all of us.”

Balance Instars will be released on 6 October. “It started off as a few ideas and finally turned into our 1-hour debut album.” Of The I being the kind of band that “personally manages every aspect of [their] music”, it will be for sale on the band’s own website, ofthei.com. With two albums, a tour in the U.S. and a former deal with Warner under their collective belt, Fruhstuck is among Poland’s finest when it comes to sensible, emotional rock. If U2 had formed in Wroclaw instead of Dublin, they might have sounded just like this.

It’s not just us: Fruhstuck’s Dutch singer Martijn Krale, who’s been living in Poland for over ten years, is the one who brought up the comparison with the creators of Joshua Tree, War and Achtung Baby. He not only lists U2 as one of the band’s main influences (along with Radiohead, King’s X, Talking Heads, Bob Dylan and even Frank Sinatra), he also adds that for the release their third album, they have decided to wait until next spring, after U2’s new album is out, “because we don’t want to make it hard on them”.  How’s that for respect for your mentors…

Fruhstuck (’breakfast’ in German) started out in 1997 and, in spite of everything you just read, they reckon they are “generally more into American rock than UK rock”. Anyway, the band has toured extensively in Poland, all of Europe and, in 2005, they even embarked on an American tour. They also released two albums “ that were received very positively by press and the public” over the three years they were signed to a Polish label distributed by Warner. In other words, they went pretty far professionally. Nevertheless, when their record deal ended, they “decided that [they] would prefer to enjoy the freedom of being independent for a while”. Which is when they turned to jamendo.

The band made made several EPs, two of which are posted on jamendo, here and here. “We liked the idea of distributing some of our songs in this way. For us, music is a way to communicate, and through sites like jamendo, we have a chance to reach a broader audience. There is something beautiful about proactively sharing your music instead of it being stolen.”

Next, after the new album is out (and U2 is left raging they didn’t come up with such brilliant tunes themselves), Fruhstuck is planning to “be more present on Polish radio and on rock festivals”, and generally to “play the maximum amount of concerts we can handle”. That might include another U.S. tour, as well as “joining a befriended band on a Japanese tour.” Way to go!

Avec à son actif deux albums, une tournée américaine et un deal avec Warner, Fruhstuck représente la crème des groupes polonais de rock sensible et émotionnel. Si U2 était né à Wroclaw au lieu de Dublin, ils sonneraient peut-être exactement comme ça.

Ce n’est pas que nous: le chanteur de Fruhstuck, Martijn Krale, un Hollandais installé en Pologne depuis une dizaine d’années, a lui-même mis sur le tapis la comparaison avec les créateurs de Joshua Tree, War et Achtung Baby. Non seulement il cite U2 parmi les principales influences de son groupe (aux côtés de Radiohead, King’s X, Talking Heads, Bob Dylan et même Frank Sinatra), il ajoute que pour la sortie de leur troisième album, ils ont décidé d’attendre le printemps prochain, après que le nouveau U2 sera sorti, “parce qu’on ne veut pas leur mettre des bâtons dans les roues”. Voilà ce qu’on appelle du respect pour ses aînés…

Fruhstuck a débuté en 1997 et, malgré tout ce que vous venez de lire, ils estiment être “généralement plus proches du rock américain que britannique”. Quoi qu’il en soit, le groupe a beaucoup tourné en Pologne, un peu partout en Europe et, en 2005, ils se sont même embarqués dans une tournée américaine. Ils ont aussi sorti deux albums “reçus très positivement par la presse et le public” au cours des trois années pendant lesquelles ils étaient signés sur un label polonais distribué par Warner. Bref, ils sont allés assez loin professionnellement. Ce qui n’empêche que lorsque leur contrat est arrivé à échéance, ils ont “décidé [qu'ils préféraient] profiter de leur liberté en restant indépendants un moment”. C’est alors qu’ils se sont tournés vers jamendo.

Le groupe a enregistré plusieurs EP, dont deux sont disponibles sur jamendo, ici et là. “Nous aimions l’idée de distribuer certaines de nos chansons de cette façon. Pour nous, la musique est un moyen de communiquer, et grâce à des sites comme jamendo, nous avons la possibilités de toucher un public élargi. Il y a quelque chose de beau dans le fait de choisir de partager sa musique plutôt que de se la faire voler.”

Par la suite, une fois que le nouvel album sera sorti (et que U2 enragera de n’avoir pas composé d’aussi brillantes chansons), Fruhstuck envisage “d’être plus présent à la radio polonaise et sur des festivals rock en Europe” et, plus globalement, de “faire autant de concerts qu’on peut”. Ceci pourrait bien comprendre une autre tournée américaine, mais aussi “rejoindre un groupe avec qui on a sympathisé pour une tournée au Japon”. Bonne route !

Con due album, una tournée negli U.S. e un accordo con Warner, Fruhstuck è fra i migliori di Polonia quando si tratta di rock emozionale.  Se U2 fosse nato a Wroclaw al posto di Dublin, forse avrebbero suonato così.

E non siamo l’unici a dirlo: è il cantante olandese di Fruhstuck, Martijn Krale, installatosi in Polonia una decina di anni fa, che paragona il suo gruppo ai creatori di Joshua Tree, War e Achtung Baby. Non solo menziona U2 come la loro maggiore influenza (insieme a Radiohead, King’s X, Talking Heads, Bob Dylan e anche Frank Sinatra), ma aggiunge anche che hanno deciso di aspettare la prossima primavera con la pubblicazione del loro terzo disco, dopo che il nuovo album di U2 sarà uscito, “perché non vogliamo che abbiano delle difficoltà”.  Ecco che chiamiamo rispetto per i propri mentori…

I Fruhstuck (’prima collazione‘ in tedesco) hanno cominciato a suonare nel 1997 e, malgrado tutto quello cha avete letto prima, si considerano “generalmente più vicini al rock americano che britannico”. Comunque, la band ha girato tutta la Polonia, l’Europa, e nel 2005 hanno fatto una tournée perfino in America. Hanno anche pubblicato due album “molto aprezzati dalla stampa e dal pubblico” durante i tre anni quando avevano un contratto con una label polacca, distribuita da Warner. In altre parole, sono andati assai lontano in senso professionale. Tuttavia, quando il loro contratto con la label è scaduto, hanno “deciso di godersi della libertà di essere indipendenti per un certo tempo”.

Il gruppo ha prodotto diversi EP, due sono stati pubblicati anche su jamendo, qui e qui. “Ci piace l’idea di distribuire qualche nostra canzone in questo modo. Per noi la musica è una forma di comunicazione, e attraverso siti come jamendo, abbiamo la possibilità di raggiungere un pubblico più ampio. C’è qualche cosa di bello nel condividere la tua musica al posto di fartela rubare.”

Dopo l’uscita del nuovo album Fruhstuck intende di essere “più presente nelle radio polonesi e sui festival di rock“, e generalmente, “suonare più concerti possibili”. Che potrebbe significare un altra tournée negli Stati Uniti, e anche “accompagnare un gruppo, con cui abbiamo dei buoni contatti, ad una tournée in Giappone” .

Sie verfügen bereits über eine ziemlich spannende Biografie: zwei Alben, eine Tour durch die USA und einen Plattenvertrag mit Warner hatten sie auch schonmal. Fruhstuck (ja, die Umlaute fehlen wohl aus Absicht) gehören wohl zu dem besten was Polen im Bereich emotional Rock zu bieten hat. Hätte sich U2 in Wroclaw anstelle von Dublin zusammengefunden - wahrscheinlich hätten sie geklungen wie diese Jungs.

Der Vergleich mit den Schöpfern von Jushua Tree, War und Achtung Baby liegt wirklich nahe. Denn sogar der holländische Sänger Martijn Krale, der seit mehr als zehn Jahren in Polen lebt, teilt diese Meinung. Nicht nur zählt die Band U2 (zusammen mit Radiohead, King’s X, Talking Heads, Bob Dylan und sogar Frank Sinatra) zu ihren Haupteinflüssen… Fruhstuck wollen mit der Veröffentlichung ihres neuen Albums sogar bis zum nächsten Frühling warten, “damit wir es ihnen nicht zu schwer machen“, wie Martijn erklärt. Das nennt man wohl wahre Ehrfurcht vor dem Mentor…

Fruhstuck begannen bereits im Jahre 1997 und bekennen sich allgemein eher zum American Rock als zum Britpop/Rock. Die Band war bereits in ganz Europa auf Tour und schaffte es im Jahr 2005 sogar, durch die USA zu touren. Außerdem brachten sie auch über ein Unterlabel von Warner zwei Alben heraus, die bei Kritikern und der Öffentlichkeit ziemlich gut ankamen. So gesehen haben sie es auf professionellem Level also ganz schön weit gebracht. Als ihr letzter Plattendeal jedoch auslief entschieden sich Fruhstuck dafür “für eine Weile unabhängig zu sein und ihre Freiheit zu geniessen.” So kamen sie dann auch zu Jamendo.

Zwei ihrer lezten EPs findet man auch hier und hier auf Jamendo. “Wir mochten die Idee, einige unserer Songs auf diese Art und Weise zu verbreiten” erklärt Martijn. “Für uns ist Musik die beste Art der Kommunikation und durch Websites wie Jamendo haben wir einfach die Möglichkeit, ein größeres Publikum zu erreichen. Es macht auch viel mehr Spaß, seine Musik absichtlich mit anderen zu teilen, als sie sich klauen zu lassen.“

Nach der Veröffentlichung des nächsten Albums (dann, wenn U2 vor Neid zerplatzen werden) planen Fruhstuck so einiges: “Wir wollen stärker im polnischen Radio stattfinden und auf diversen Rock Festivals zu Gange sein” meint Martijn. “Wir wollen einfach so viel live spielen wie es geht!“. Dies könnte auch eine erneute US-Tour bedeuten und eine befreundete Band hat auch schon nachgefragt, ob Fruhstuck sie nicht auf ihrer Japan-Tour begleiten will. Das klingt spannend - weiter so!

Con dos álbumes, una gira en EE.UU y un acuerdo con Warner, Fruhstuck es ahora mismo lo mejor en Polonia en materia de rock sensible y emocional. Si los U2 hubieran nacido en Wroclaw en lugar de Dublin, su música sonaría exactamente así.

No somos los únicos en decirlo: Fue el mismo Martijn Krale, cantante de Fruhstuck, instalado en Polonia desde hace unos diez años, quién lanzó la comparación con los creadores de Joshua Tree, War y Achtung Baby. No sólo menciona U2 entre las principales influencias de su banda (junto con Radiohead, King’s X, Talking Heads, Bob Dylan e incluso Frank Sinatra), sino que incluso dice que han decidido esperar la próxima primavera para el estreno de su tercer álbum, “para no perturbar” a los U2 que sacarán el suyo en ese momento. ¡Eso sí que es respeto hacía los mayores!…

Fruhstuck inició su carrera en 1997 y a pesar de lo que acabamos de decir, consideran que su música es «de manera general más afines al rock americano que al británico ». El caso es que la banda ha dado nimerosos conciertos en Polonia, en muchos sitios por Europa y en el 2005, incluso dieron una gira por EE.UU. Han sacado dos álbumes «que tuvieron buenas críticas tanto por parte de la prensa como del público» en estos últimos tres años en los que tenían contrato con un sello polaco distribuido por Warner. En fin, que han llegado bastante lejos en su vida profesional. Lo que no quita que cuando cumplió su contrato con el gran label, decidieron que les apetecía «aprovechar su libertad para trabajar de forma independiente». Fue en ese momento cuando tocaron a la puerta de jamendo.

La bando grabó varios EP, entre los cuales dos se encuentran en Jamendo, uno aquí y otro ahí.
«Nos gusta la idea de distribuir algunas de nuestras canciones de esta manera. Vemos la música como un medio de comunicación y gracias a páginas como jamendo, tenemos la posibilidad de tocar un público más amplio. Hay algo bonito en el hecho de compartir su música de forma voluntaria cuando de todas formas la gente la podría robar por internet».
