This Berlin-based band-cum-label figures the best way to get people interested in its experimental, multidisciplinary approach to music is to give it out for free. Good, that’s what Jamendo’s here for.

Gruenanlage, the band, is three Berlin musicians playing some sort of electro-rock with many influences (Bauhaus, Radiohead, Einstürzende Neubauten, Joy Division, to name a few) and many guests (including actors, photographers and web designers). Gruenanlage.com, the website and indie label, was created around it in 2004, “when mainstream media couldn’t do anything with our work. The radios didn’t play our music because it was too strange, too complex and too sophisticated, explains Marcel Weller who, in addition to playing guitar and bass, programs the drum machines, records and does mixing and mastering. However, it’s nothing new to say that mainstream media does not leave much room for innovation and performance.”

Gruenanlage.com, a label striving to be “open to all possible forms of expression and to reach all people interested in the examination of society and the human condition”, not only features music by the band and its three members individually (Marcel Weller, Markus Wenninger and Jan Treuner), as well as Ewa Firsowicz (songwriting); it also offers other art forms, like visual performances, audio drama and even literature. Jan Treuner’s new novel will be available on the website next year.

Right now, the team is busy planning concerts in the next few months for Ewa Firsowicz and Gruenanlage at which they will sell CDs. On the web on the other hand, the music is all free: “the idea is to get more publicity, and that way there are no obstacles like Gema (the German ASCAP or MCPS-PRS) to overcome while using the web as an output.” Sounds appealing? Gruenanlage.com is open to “all artists with nuggets buried in their computers”...

Gruenanlage, le groupe, c’est trois musiciens de Berlin pratiquant une sorte d’electro-rock aux influences multiples (citons Bauhaus, Radiohead, Einstürzende Neubauten ou encore Joy Division) et avec de nombreux invités (dont des comédiens, photographes et web designers). Les radios ne jouaient pas notre music parce qu’elle était trop étrange, trop complexe et trop sophistiquée, explique Marcel Weller qui, en plus de jouer de la guitare et de la basse, est chargé de la programmation des boîtes à rythmes, de l’enregistrement, du mixage et du mastering. Toutefois, ce n’est pas très nouveau de dire que les mass média ne laissent pas beaucoup de place pour l’innovation et la performance.”

Gruenanlage.com, un label qui s’efforce d’être “ouvert à toutes les formes possibles d’expression et de s’adresser à toutes les personnes intéressées par l’examen de la société et de la condition humaine” (rien que ça !), ne propose pas que la musique du groupe du même nom et de ses trois membres (Marcel Weller, donc, Marks Wenninger et Jan Treuner), ainsi que de Ewa Firsowicz (songwriting); il offre aussi d’autres formes d’art, comme les performances visuelles, la fiction enregistrée et même la littérature. Le nouveau roman de Jan Treuner sera disponible sur le site l’année prochaine.

Pour le moment, l’équipe s’affaire à préparer des concerts ces prochains mois pour Ewa Firsowicz et Gruenanlage lors desquels des CD seront vendus. Sur le web, en revanche, toute la musique est gratuite : “l’idée est d’avoir ainsi une meilleure exposition, et puis de cette façon il n’y a pas d’obstacles comme la Gema (la Sacem allemande) à surmonter lorsqu’on utilise le web comme moyen de diffusion.” Intéressés? Immer wieder beziehen Gruenanlage aber auch diverse Gäste aus den Bereichen Schauspiel, Fotografie oder Webdesign mit in ihre Arbeit ein. Gruenanlage.com wurde als Website und Indie-Label im Jahr 2004 gegründet, “weil die Mainstream-Medien nichts mit unseren Werken anfangen konnten. Die Radiostationen weigerten sich die Musik zu spielen, weil sie ihnen zu seltsam, komplex und anspruchsvoll war” erklärt Marcel Weller, der nicht nur die Gitarren und Bässe einspielt, sondern sich zusätzlich auch noch um die Drumcomputer, die Aufnahme und das Mixen und Mastern kümmert. “Es ist ja nun kein Geheimnis, dass die Mainstream-Medien eher wenig Raum für Innovationen und Weitherentwicklung bieten.“

Gruenanlage.com ist ein Label, das sich “offen gegenüber den verschiedensten Ausdrucksformen zeigt und Menschen erreichen möchte, die an der Auseinandersetzung mit gesellschaftlichen und existenziellen Themen interessiert sind.“

Es gitbt auf Gruenanlage.com nicht nur die Band, alle drei Mitglieder als individuelle Künstler (Marcel Weller, Markus Wenninger and Jan Treuner) und Ewa Firsowicz (songwriting), sondern auch verschiedene Kunstformen wie Visual Performances, Hörspiele und sogar Literatur. So wird Jan Treuner’s neues Buch im nächsten Jahr auf der Website veröffentlicht werden.

Im Moment ist das Team damit beschäftigt, Konzerte von Ewa Firsowicz und Gruenanlage zu planen, auf denen es ihre CD’s auch zu kaufen gibt. Im Internet ist die Musik hingegen weiterhin kostenlos: “Unser Ziel ist es, eine größere Öffentlichkeit zu erreichen, ohne Störfaktoren wie beispielsweise die GEMA“. Hört sich das interessant an? El grupo Gruenanlage, está compuesto por tres músicos berlinés que hacen una especie de música electrónica mezclada con rock. Su trabajo tiene influencias múltiples (entre las cuales cabe destacar Bauhaus, Radiohead, Einstürzende Neubauten o Joy Division) y cuenta con numerosos invitados (entre los cuales actores de teatro, fotógrafos y deseñadores web). Gruenanlage.com, la página internet del sello independiente, ha sido creado en el 2004 “porque los grandes medias no podían hacer nada con nuestras creaciones. Las radios no ponían nuestra música porque era demasiado extraña, compleja y sofisticada, explica Marcel Weller quien se encarga de la programación de las cajas, de la grabación y del mastering además de tocar la guitarra y el bajo en el seno del grupo. De todas formas, está claro que el hecho de que los grandes medias no dejen espacio para la inovación, la interpretación y la originalidad no es ninguna novedad.”

Gruenanlage.com es un sello que se esfuerza en ser “abierto a todas las posibles formas de expresión y dirigirse a todas las personas interesadas en un análisis de la sociedad y de la condición humana”, y no propone sólo música del grupo Gruenanlage y sus tres miembros (Marcel Weller, Marks Wenninger y Jan Treuner), o de Ewa Firsowicz, cantoautora que también forma parte del sello; sino también otras formas de arte, como interpretaciones visuales, cuentos audio grabados o incluso literatura. La última novela de Jan Treuner estará disponible en su página web el año que viene.

Ahora mismo, el equipo se atarea en preparar conciertos para los próximos meses para Ewa Firsowicz y Gruenanlage en los cuales se venderán CDs. Started as an initiative for and by independent musicians, this guide just went online (it’s still in beta). Its goal is to collect and share useful information for all musicians trying to get their music out there by any means, “to help [them] win fans globally by getting [their] music created, distributed and just plain noticed”.

Nach den Philippinen statten wir nun mal der einzigen Repräsentantin aus Guatemala einen Besuch ab: die junge Popsängerin Pamela Garcia.

Vor acht Jahren fing sie mit dem Gitarrespielen an, weil sie eine Begleitung für ihren Gesang brauchte. Sehr schnell merkte sie , dass sie am liebsten nur noch Songs schreiben wollte, und das am liebsten bis zum Ende ihres Lebens. Mittlerweile hat Pamela Garcia bereits einen Ruf als Underground-Künstlerin in Guatemala City, wo sie außerdem Theater spielt: Radiostationen spielen ihre Musik nicht, “weil sie nicht kommerziell ist” wodurch sie zu einer Art “Außenseiterin” wird. “Aber immer öfter grüßen mich die Leute auf der Straße, was verdeutlicht, dass die Leute, die mich live erlebt haben, meine Musik auch wirklich zu schätzen wissen.“

Von der Musik zu leben ist in Guatemala jedoch nicht gerade einfach. Regionale Musiker bekommen eher wenig Unterstützung und müssen zusätzlich ganz normal arbeiten, weil die Öffentlichkeit generell viel mehr an internationalen Stars interessiert ist. Pamela lässt sich dadurch jedoch nicht entmutigen und betont, dass es einige ja trotzdem schaffen.

Bis jetzt hat Pamela erst zwei Songs bei Jamendo hochgeladen. Sie bereut es, dass sie sich in letzter Zeit eher weniger um ihre Musik kümmern konnte, aber das soll sich bald ändern, da sie viele Pläne hat. “Im Moment schreibe ich wieder Songs. Ich werde mein neues Material aufnehmen und mit euch teilen. Außerdem werde ich wieder mehr Konzerte spielen und in Zukunft auch Musik fürs Theater schreiben.“

Hoy me gustaría presentaros a la única representante de Guatemala en Jamendo: la joven cantante de pop Pamela Garcia.

Empezó a tocar guitarra hace 8 años porque necesitaba acompañamiento cuando cantaba. Luego, rapidamente, se « enamoró del hecho de componer » y entendió que « era lo que quería hacer hasta el final de [su] vida. » Hoy, Pamela es una especie de celebridad underground en Guatemala City (también es actriz de teatro): las radios no ponen su música « porque no es comercial », lo que la convierte en « outsider », pero « de vez en cuando, hay gente que [le] saluda por la calle. Eso [le] permite darse cuenta de que a la gente que [le] han oído o visto en el escenario realmente les gusta lo que [hace] . »

También nos explica lo difícil que es vivir de su música en Guatemala. Los músicos locales no reciben mucho apoyo por parte del público que prefiere artistas internacionales y a menudo necesitan tener otro trabajo aparte de la música para poder ganarse la vida. « Pero, no quita que algunos lo consiguen. » dice. No deja que nada la desanime.

Pamela sólo envió dos canciones a Jamendo. Lamenta no tener mucho tiempo para la música últimamente. Pero eso va a cambiar porque no le faltan proyectos. « Retomé la escritura. Quiero grabar mis nuevas canciones y compartirlas con vosotros. También quiero volver a hacer conciertos, y en el futuro, escribir música para el teatro. »

Après les Philippines, permettez-nous de vous présenter l’unique représentante du Guatemala sur Jamendo, la jeune chanteuse pop Pamela Garcia.

Elle a commencé la guitar il y a huit ans car elle avait besoin de s’accompagner lorsqu’elle chantait. Et puis elle est rapidement « tombée amoureuse du fait de composer » et a compris que « c’est ce qu’[elle] voulait faire pour le restant de [sa] vie. » Aujourd’hui, Pamela Garcia est une sorte de célébrité underground à Guatemala City (elle est aussi actrice au théâtre): les radios ne passent pas sa musique « car elle n’est pas commerciale », ce qui en fait « une outsider », mais « de temps en temps, des gens me disent bonjour dans la rue. Ca me fait réaliser que les gens qui m’ont entendue ou vue sur scène aiment vraiment ce que je fais. »

Elle explique aussi que vivre de sa musique au Guatemala est très difficile. Les musiciens locaux, peu soutenus car le public s’intéresse généralement plus aux artistes internationaux, ont besoin de travailler à côté pour pouvoir subvenir à leurs besoins. « Mais, dit-elle, refusant de se laisser décourager, cela ne veut pas dire qu’il n’y en a pas qui y arrivent. »

Pamela n’a posté que deux chansons sur Jamendo. Elle regrette n’avoir pas eu beaucoup de temps à consacrer à sa musique dernièrement. Mais cela va changer, et les projets ne manquent pas. « Actuellement, j’ai recommencé à écrire. Je veux enregistrer mes nouvelles chansons et les partager avec vous. Je veux aussi refaire des concerts plus souvent, et, dans le futur, écrire de la musique pour le théâtre. »

After the Philippines, let us introduce the sole representative of Guatemala on Jamendo, young pop singer Pamela Garcia.

She took up the guitar eight years ago because she needed to accompany her singing. Then she rapidly “fell in love with writing” and understood that “this was what [she] wanted to do for the rest of [her] life.” Now Pamela Garcia is some kind of an underground celebrity in Guatemala City (she’s also a theater actress): radios don’t play her music “because it’s not commercial”, which makes her “an outsider”, but “from time to time, people say hi to me in the street. That makes me realize that people who have heard or seen me really like what I do.”

She also explains that making a living from your music in Guatemala is hard. Local musicians, receiving little support because the public is generally more interested in international artists, need to work on the side to support themselves. “But, she says, refusing to be discouraged, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some who manage.”

Pamela has only uploaded two songs on Jamendo. She regrets not having had much time to devote to her music lately, but that’s going to change; and she’s got plenty of plans to keep herself busy. “Right now, I’m writing again. I want to record my new material and share it with you. I also want to play concerts more often again, and in the future write music for theater.”

Every now and then you’ll stumble upon a hidden gem on Jamendo. That’s exactly what happened when we discovered Papa Dada, three Belgians kicking up a storm with only a piano, a bass and drums.

Their 6-track EP “prePOPsterous” is the kind that impresses with just one listen: the songs, the recording, the melodies, everything is so masterfully crafted you’d think these three musicians from Brussels have an entire professional career under their belt. But Papa Dada only exists since 2005, and John, Julien and Hubert are just three mostly self-taught thirtysomething musicians who have been playing in bands since they were teenagers. “One of the great strengths of Papa Dada is that we’re not trying to impress people with our technicality, yet we have enough mastery to reproduce what’s in our heads”, says Hubert (drums and backing vocals).

Surprisingly, the band doesn’t have much of an audience yet, they say. They have only played a few dozen gigs in Belgium, “but the name is starting to get around, and we’re beginning to see people sing and clap at concerts without being our friends, which is nice.” “prePOPsterous”, their only release, was recorded in 2007: they sell it at concerts and published it on Jamendo, appreciative of the fact that here they “get reviews from musicians instead of journalists, explains Hubert. We don’t have a problem with giving out our music for free, that’s the best way it can get around! We’re not looking to become millionaire rock stars, we just want to make music and get it heard.”

Inevitably, similarities are striking between Papa Dada, with its piano/distorted bass/drums formula, and the band that popularized it, Ben Folds Five, particularly on a track like the brilliant “Art Gallery”. But comparisons are cut short: “It’s a band we like, sure, but we’re not trying to imitate them, clarifies Hubert. It’s only a coincidence that our line-up is the same as theirs.”

So what’s next for Papa Dada? A few gigs in september, but mostly work on new songs in  order to record a new EP by the end of 2008. “We’ve been playing together for four years, so we’re starting to explore new sounds and technologies… We might even bring out some guitars!”
