Jamendo has turned ‘Orange’ : Launch of the new version
After two months of hard work, fourty gallons of coffee, and tons of pizzas, we have just launched the new version of Jamendo.
New design, new ergonomy, new logo, new functionnalities, this new version is designed by taking into consideration the many recommandations of the users and the community.
The most important innovation is the HTTP download process : it is much more easier and it gives you the opportunity to download from Jamendo song by song or a complete album.
We hope that this new version will give you complete satisfaction.
Discover it now and have a lot of fun !

When is the relaunch of the german version planned? I saw a “test the new version” Button and I was redirected to “blue.jamendo.com”…

Looking cool, trying it out now :)

It’s great that you are thinking about usability and trying to redesign jamendo web site but …
I was sure that you will end the Bad Idea TM which is to “connect” language version with the content of the page. Why didn’t you change this? It’s crazy that:
- i have to use english localisation to read english forum
- i’ll open French localised page if will click a link to album here on jamendo blog.

I totally agree with you that the new version is easier to use and I like the new design. But I really miss some features!
Where is the possibility to download high-quality Ogg Vorbis files? I know, sometimes less is more, but wouldn’t it be possible e.g. to add an option to the users settings where one can select between MP3 and Ogg Vorbis? And where can I find similar albums?
December 9th, 2007 at 5:48 am
I just tried the Orange Jamendo site for a few albums, and some of my favourite features seem to be gone!
While BitTorrent downloads are still just a few clicks away, the OGG files seem to be unreachable? All I get is the MP3 bitorrent & http downloads - where is the superior Free Format?
No quick-search dropdown anymore?
No “Similar Albums” box to the right on every album page?
Please tell me the “Orange” Jamendo will re-gain these features soon, and in the meantime, thanks for leaving the “Blue” site up - I’ll be using Blue until Orange gets fixed!

In album page, now I can’t find the embed code. Hope it will be added to new layout :)
Also, the BitTorrent download from new layout only provides, MP3, but no OGG ?
December 9th, 2007 at 7:06 am
what happened to OGG format?
December 9th, 2007 at 2:25 pm
I like the new layout and colors a lot. But I’m missing downloads in better quality OGG format. Could we get this back, please.

The new Jamendo site doesn’t honor my preference to get Ogg Vorbis audio files. I don’t see how to get Ogg Vorbis tracks from the new site at all. How does one get Ogg Vorbis tracks from the new Jamendo website?

I generally like the new look. I’m still poking around a bit and getting used to it. There are some features that I may miss, but it’s entirely likely that they have been re-invented and I haven’t found them yet. One thing I am missing right away though is the apparent lack of OGG files. I really prefer OGG’s sound qualtiy. MP3’s typically sound a little “tinny” or “bright” to me because of the dynamic range compression that is often used on them so I’ve gotten into the habit of just avoiding them whenever possible. I also prefer the slightly smaller size. On my 2GB player, the small difference between MP3 and OGG usually means I can fit one or two more albums on it, and they sound better! I hope the apparent loss of OGG files is a temporary one.

I like the orange version, but the option to play music on my local player is missing… playing some track automatically start the online player. Is it a temporary “bug”?

I’d like to voice my concerns about Ogg Vorbis downloads being missing as well.
Did the Jamendo team completely forget that Ogg Vorbis is a patent and royalty free format, unlike MP3? Did you guys know that most Linux distro’s - I’m using Ubuntu here - ship without MP3 support out of the box, because MP3 is patented and requires royalty fees? Yes, I know MP3 support is easy to get on Ubuntu, but even if I were using Windows XP Ogg Vorbis is still superior because it’s a better quality codec and because it’s free/open. I’d rather see MP3 die, but I seriously hope that Jamendo is going to correct this mistake.
Besides this criticism, I think the Jamendo team is doing a great job. The website redesign is well done.
But why did Jamendo decide to introduce HTTP downloads? HTTP downloads are going to cost Jamendo more money than using Bittorrent (for example) exclusively, right? I’d rather avoid using HTTP downloads for that reason because I don’t want to create unnecessary costs for Jamendo, but as soon as I download an album, it immediatly starts the HTTP download, which I have to cancel, before I can get an (MP3!) torrent.
December 13th, 2007 at 2:22 pm
+1 requirement for Ogg Vorbis. For me the site’s useless without them.
December 13th, 2007 at 10:17 pm
… more functionality? More like missing functionality. Where are the RSS feeds?
December 14th, 2007 at 8:48 am
I can only agree Alexander vL.
I can handle the loss of OGG even though i’m using Ubuntu but my new DAP will play OGG through Rockbox (which was one reason I bought it: to get OGG-Files on the go).
The new understatement of P2P-Downloads is a very bad thing, since I am talking to all my friends to use Jamendo and a Bittorrent Client to support the artists AND the platform.
Therefore, If you really want to offer HTTP Downloads, please:
Put a 2 or 3 option choice in the download-Popup and don’t start the HTTP instantly. Plus give the P2P-Downloads more room to find them better. The lower left corner isn’t the right place, I think.
December 14th, 2007 at 1:14 pm
I have to agree with “bazzmann”: I like to play the songs in my local player (winamp) using the optimized equalizer settings for my loudspeakers. I don’t like web based mp3/off players at all since I hace to adapt to every new one popping up.
Without a simple link to start external players Jamendo is very less usable to me :-(

The old (very awesome) search function NEEDS to be reimplemented.
I appreciate how google search might make you some advertising revenue and take the strain of the large select queries of the server, but seen as it sacrifices the descriptive results page (that was awesome) AND the dropdown search suggestions (the was even more awesome because I don’t always remember what this or that artist is called, only perhaps the first word) I think its a major downgrade. Secondly, the search results often link to pages on jamendo.com/fr/ which is bad for me…as I don’t speak french. I hate it (sorry to say, I know you must have spent ages!).
Also, I am missing the artist forum link on artists pages. Have forums disappeared, or is it just the link thats missing?
For now its blue.jamendo.com for me

Hey just a heads up: I can’t subscribe to the feed from this blog, I just get errors.
Also, do many of the bands posting songs on here also perform live? Are you going to add some kind of concerts syndication /tracking feature (like oodle, gruvr, tourbus…)?
It would be so much more convenient!

I like the blue version much more. It seems way more original than the orange one. I don’t like tabs in main menu, don’t like the empty orange bar under tabs; album page looks more interesting in blue. Popular albums list lacks separation between albums. I also do not like the orange logo. Orange layout seems less web 2.0 to me :)
December 18th, 2007 at 8:26 pm
I’m also one of those that miss Ogg Vorbis the most from the new site. Please, do give us back Ogg Vorbis.
December 18th, 2007 at 8:28 pm
hey, why did you remove the ogg support? that really was a great feature…
December 19th, 2007 at 10:36 pm
Disappointment…
The old look was fresh, sober and original. The new one is a glitchy lackluster trendy Web2.0 copycat. Too bad.
And, of course, breaking OGG sucks…
– long time fan here, recommended jamendo to many friends

a big thanks for leaving the blue jamendo available, though :)
but what’s up with “awaiting moderation”?
December 22nd, 2007 at 9:59 pm
Please make ogg vorbis default.
December 27th, 2007 at 1:24 am
Molto bella la nuova veste…
E’ ancora un po’ da testare, ma direi che è molto funzionale…
A quando il passaggio definitivo alla nuova versione?
December 28th, 2007 at 6:08 pm
Http download is a good thing (at work : no torrent), but online player and http download is still filtered because url contains word “mp3″ (replacing mp3 with mpwhatever would solve the problem)
(FYI : your security code is unreadable, even for a human…)

Orange version:
- popup is very vey very bad (remove it!)
- download dialog is ugly
- play dialog is ugly
Blue version:
- better ajax dialog
- better tango icon

Evidently the Jamendo team isn’t reading this blog or doesn’t care enough to respond.
Let this be clear: we want OGG and RSS feeds added to the Orange site.

[...] new “Orange” Jamendo seems to be missing ALL of my short list of favourite features, except the BitTorrent-in-two-clicks [...]
