Jamendo introduces The Spiral: a new music discovery engine

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

The Spiral is a new innovative way to discover the 2500+ Creative Commons-licensed albums on Jamendo.

As you can see it is quite different from the usual white Jamendo theme. We wanted to build something both funny and useful.

The funny side is obvious ;-) Everything moves and you can just mess around with the covers. Think of a flashless Digg Swarm.

On the “useful” side, once you are logged in, the Spiral remembers your tastes and when you click on one of the “Star”, “Later” and “Hide” buttons, the Spiral will update its content accordingly. In an upcoming update you will also be able to add you own custom branches.

In the meantime, try the Spiral! And make sure to recommend the nice albums you will find to your friends ;-)

Widget improvements: Color customization for radio.blog, new destination selector, more tests

Friday, February 9th, 2007

Widgets are spreading! After a few requests we added a few new features:

  • You can now change the colors of your radio.blog widget to match the design of your website or myspace page.
  • We have added another export destination selector above the HTML code to make sure you pick the right one.
  • The widgets are now certified to work with DotClear 1.x, WordPress 2.x and Opera Community. Thanks to Isaplai for his tests. Please report your success on other hosts so that we can add them to the list!

Here is a custom radio.blog created with our Widgets interface that may fit some MySpace pages I know ;-)

Cadeaux du Japon

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

Jamendo publishes patches to the opensource XSPF Player

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

Yesterday, we released our new MySpace-compatible widgets and since then the response has been very positive, some Jamendo artists started to use them on their pages and to give us feedback. Please continue!

We felt some improvement was possible over the already good XSPF player, so we made some patches that display the cover before playing the track, allow scrollwheel and keyboard navigation as well as a few other details. You can read Sylvain’s post on the patches here and of course check the source on our SourceForge repository.

The patched player is now used instead of the old one, no need to update for those of you who already use it. Here is a preview :

Remember, you can get the code for these players in each album or user pages on Jamendo!

Jamendo announces widget integration with MySpace, Radio.blog, XSPF Player & DewPlayer.

Wednesday, February 7th, 2007

This weekend has been all about widgets at Jamendo. Today we are pleased to announce the release of a bunch of new widgets that will allow our artists and users to export their music like never before.

The big question when it comes to widgets seems to be always the same: “Nice, but do you support MySpace?”. Answer: YES!

We also support a wide range of hosts like WordPress, DotClear, Xanga, Friendster, … We’d be pleased to hear about your experiences with other hosts.

Anyway, let me take you through the new widgets that are available for each album and each user on their Jamendo pages.

Standard Jamendo Player

This player is the only one that can work without Flash. It features the cover and has a large-size option. Also available in XHTML version. Only downside: not compatible with MySpace.

Radio.blog

You may already know this one well. It even seems to be featured in the 2006 google zeitgest.

XSPF MusicPlayer

This player is the best opensource webplayer out there. We may send a patch that displays the cover even when it’s not playing.

DewPlayer

A nice little player from France.

You can check all the other available players on Sylvain’s widget page for instance.

Please tell us if you would like another popular webplayer to be available through Jamendo!
